If your DVR has an RJ-45 connection that most likely means that it is a network capable DVR. Typically, as with the DVRs that CCTV Camera Pros supplies, they come with remote viewing / network viewing software which can also backup video over the network or Internet. You will not be able to just telnet into the DVR and do anything useful. You need to find out if anyone has the software that came with that DVR.

In answer to your other question, a regular network cable should work fine. Nothing special about that.
