A customer looking for a dual purpose boat security camera / boat backup camera recently contacted me for help. This what he asked.

We are looking for the best dome cameras for a new ferry boat that we are purchasing. We would like them to do double duty as dock-assist cameras where the captain can view live video on iPad and also to record video to a DVR as traditional security cameras. We need to have remote, real-time access to view our cameras as well as well. We would also like some type of alert system to notify us if there is activity after hours.

This is what I recommended to this customer.

One of the best choices for a durable dome security camera for a boat is our AHD-AD24H dome.

This dome is IP68 weatherproof rated which is the highest rating that commercial security cameras come in. It stands the test of time in the harshest conditions.

Please note that these cameras do not have the same level of corrosion proof capability as some stainless steel enclosed marine cameras, but those cameras can cost up to 10x more in some cases. So, it is a trade-off. In our experience the AHD-AD24H holds up very well for boats.

For recording, I always recommend our iDVR-PRO surveillance DVRs. These will help serve the dual purpose of a live display backup camera for the captain and a recording security system.

iDVR-PRO includes excellent mobile apps and desktop software for remote camera viewing.

iDVR-PRO DVRs also have a very easy to use interface. You can see a video demo here.

In regards to the live video camera view for the boat captain. A better solution than using the iOS app on iPad is to setup a dedicated live video display monitor at the captains station. The iPad app works over WIFI, so there can be a delay and there also can be interference.

I believe that for the captain’s live display monitor, you want the most reliable solution. iDVR-PRO DVRs have an advanced spot monitor output function that lets you configure a custom live video display for the captain on one monitor. This spot monitor display is independent of the second monitor that can be used for system management (viewing recorded video footage, checking the system log for events, configuring recording schedule, etc.).

This video shows a demo of the dual monitor / live display monitor setup.

You also mentioned being able to get alerts from the system after hours. iDVR-PRO DVRs support email alerts and mobile push notifications. You can learn about how this is setup here.
