Barn Camera System for Security and to Monitor Livestock

Home Forums Wireless Security Cameras & Systems Barn Camera System for Security and to Monitor Livestock

  • We recently had a customer that wanted to install cameras inside and outside their barn for both recording video surveillance as well as to monitor livestock with live video back at their house. Running cable from the house to the barn was not an option for them.

This was the recommendation CCTV Camera Pros had for this customer.

CCTV Camera Pros has designed many security camera systems for detached barns over the years both for general security and for farmers to keep an eye on the animals in their barn. Our Viewtron IP cameras, Viewtron NVR, and our wireless bridge system to connect the barn to the house is a great solution and what we almost always recommend for detached barns and garages.

The design is described in detail in this article and video. Take a look specifically at solution #3 in that article, which describes what to do when you can not run any network cable from your house to the barn.

Barn Camera Systems That Work for Detached Garages Too

    The short version is this:

You can mount as many IP cameras as you need inside and outside of the barn. This 4K resolution bullet model is an excellent choice. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/IP-bullet-camera-p/ip-b8.htm

If you prefer a dome style, this is basically the same camera except in a dome housing. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/IP-dome-camera-p/ip-d8.htm

You can use some of each also if you like.

All of the barn cameras are hard wired back to a PoE switch like this one, using CAT5 or CAT6 network cable. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/8-Port-POE-Switch-p/poe-sw88.htm

The uplink port on the PoE switch is connected to the transmitter antenna from this wireless bridge system. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/Wireless-Camera-Antenna-p/wifi-eh9500.htm

This J-Pipe makes installation on a barn, and the receiver side on the house, simpler. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/J-Pipe-Mount-p/wifi-b107.htm

The receiver antenna from the wireless bridge system is installed on your home (where the NVR will reside). Please note that there must be an unobstructed direct line of sight between the transmitter and receiver antennas.

The receiver antenna gets connected to your existing network via any existing network router or switch.

One of these Viewtron IP camera NVRs also gets connected to your local network via a router or switch. https://www.cctvcamerapros.com/IP-Camera-NVRs-s/1472.htm

Now you have a wireless network between your house and barn. The Viewtron NVR can connect to all of the IP cameras because they are on the same local area network as the NVR.

Optional: if you also want any security cameras on your house, you can hard wire those cameras directly to the PoE ports on the back of the Viewtron NVR using CAT5 or CAT6 network cable. You can see this in the above diagram.
