  • How do I install a new hard drive on a Viewtron NVR / DVR, or replace a failed storage drive?

Viewtron recorders support up to 12 terabytes per HDD bay. (eg if your Viewtron DVR / NVR has (2) HDD bays you would be able to install up to (2) 12 Terabyte Drives max (for a total of 24 Terabytes).

You will want to be sure to use a surveillance-grade drive (we currently use Seagate SkyHawk drives; Western Digital Purple drives work just as well).

    1. Power off and open the recorder

Power the DVR / NVR completely off. Remove the top shield (a few screws on the sides and back hold it in place).

    2. Connect the hard drive

Plug the hard drive into the motherboard with the SATA data cable and the SATA power cable.

    3. Format the new drive in Disk Management

Put the top cover back on, power the recorder on, then:

    1. Go to Start > Settings > Disk Management.
    2. Find the new HDD in the list.
    3. Click the Format button next to that drive.
Viewtron Disk Management screen with the Format button highlighted for a new hard drive

After formatting finishes, the new storage HDD will be added as a storage device and the NVR / DVR will record to it.
