An installation partner recently asked CCTV Camera Pros the following questions:

I have a big project that is really a great oppurtunity for us. They need about (21) 5 megapixel cameras, and some type of recording device. I really dont know which way to go or what network requirements are. There are nine diffrent but local buildings with fiber between them. My question is could I put one pc recorder that I get you guys to build or should I put several diffrent 4 channel pc recorders. Also, please let know how the system will tax the bandwidth of the network.

    CCTV Camera Pros response:

The system that I recommend would be a PC based NUUO IP recorder with 5 megapixel Arecont cameras. As long as those nine fiber connections create a single network for you, you can use a single centralized recorder. Each 5 Megapixel camera recording at 5 megapixel resolution at 7 frames per second recording would use 35mbps (megabytes per second of bandwidth). So for 21 of them, the total network bandwidth used would be 735 Megabytes per second. They definitely would nee a gigabit network dedicated to their system. This means that it is recommended that their surveillance system be put on a separate switch from the rest of the network and the switch should be a gigabit ethernet switch.
