NVR HDMI Out Not Working: Main HDMI1 vs HDMI-2 Spot Monitor

  • A customer with a Viewtron VT-NVR-16 recently asked why the NVR boots but the monitor shows a black screen with clock, or only a clock and no cameras. Here is the short version of the question: “My Viewtron NVR has a black screen with only a clock on the monitor. No live view of cameras, no picture, blank HDMI. NVR display not working. Is the recorder broken?” No. On Viewtron NVRs with two HDMI ports (dual HDMI), that symptom usually means your HDMI cable is connected to HDMI-2 (spot / secondary output) instead of HDMI-1 (main display). Move the HDMI cable to HDMI-1 and the main live view comes back.

Why does a Viewtron NVR show a black screen with only a clock?

Many Viewtron IP NVRs have two HDMI outputs plus VGA. HDMI-1 is the main display for the full on-screen menu and multi-camera live view (up to 4K on supported models). HDMI-2 is the spot / secondary HDMI output. The product pages call this the spot monitor function. The NVR manual labels HDMI-2 as an AUX / secondary output that shows video only, with no menu. If the monitor is plugged into the wrong HDMI port (HDMI-2 / spot output) and nothing useful is assigned there, you can get a blank screen, no live view, or only a clock with no camera picture even though the NVR itself is running fine.

How do I fix no live view or blank HDMI on the monitor?

Check the back of the NVR and move the monitor cable from HDMI-2 to HDMI-1. That is the main HDMI port. Power the monitor on, and you should get the normal Viewtron live view and menu. If you need a second display, leave a second cable on HDMI-2 for spot monitor / secondary use after the main screen is working on HDMI-1. This same HDMI-1 vs HDMI-2 check applies when people describe it as only a clock on the monitor, no video on the HDMI monitor, or NVR boots but monitor black.

On the rear panel, HDMI 1 is the top HDMI jack (main display). HDMI 2 is the bottom HDMI jack (spot / secondary output). Plug the monitor into HDMI 1.

Which Viewtron NVRs have HDMI1 and HDMI2?

Dual HDMI with spot monitor / secondary output is part of the current Viewtron NVR line, including the VT-NVR-16 and VT-NVR-32. The same idea shows up across the Viewtron IP NVR family, including smaller models such as the VT-NVR-4. Spec pages list two HDMI ports: 4K on HDMI-1 and 1080p on HDMI-2, with HDMI-2 available as a spot monitor for IP cameras. For a product overview of the 16-channel model, see this 16 channel NVR demo.

If you still have no picture after the cable is on HDMI-1, email the exact NVR model and what the monitor shows to info@cctvcamerapros.net and we will help you troubleshoot.
