My understanding is the Audio Stream Input/Output (ASIO) is used as an interface between a computer sounds card and software application. Typically, with video surveillance applications, the audio is captured by either a DVR card (if you are using a CCTV system) or over TCP/IP in the case of an IP camera that supports audio, not the sound card of the PC itself.

I am sure there are other ways to do it, but this is the way we are most familiar with.
