Night Owl X Mobile App Ending: Replace Your Night Owl DVR

A customer asked us this question about the Night Owl mobile app for iPhone and Android shutdown.

“Night Owl says the Night Owl X mobile app is going away at the end of 2026. I still want to see my security cameras on my phone. Do I have to throw out my whole system?”

Night Owl Mobile App Will Stop Working on December 31, 2026

According to Night Owl’s mobile app sunset notice, the Night Owl X (phone) and Night Owl X HD (tablet) apps will be removed from the App Store and Google Play, get no more updates, and lose live tech support after December 31, 2026. Night Owl lists these apps for its XHD, THD, H2THD and WNVR201 series. Your security recorder may keep recording and showing video on a TV, but remote viewing and alerts are not guaranteed, and installing Night Owl Protect does not make an older recorder work with it.

Can I keep my Night Owl cameras?

Yes, if they plug in with BNC coax connectors. Viewtron DVRs accept AHD, HD-TVI, HD-CVI and analog CVBS cameras on every BNC input, so the XHD and THD cameras you already have work as is. Night Owl Wi-Fi cameras will not connect, and cameras with 2-way audio, a siren or a spotlight show video only. Which Viewtron DVR should I get?

Match your channel count. An 8 channel Night Owl system moves to the VT-DVR-8 hybrid DVR (8 BNC + 8 IP camera inputs), and a 16 channel system moves to the VT-DVR-16 16 channel DVR (16 BNC + 8 IP). Remote access sets up by scanning a QR code on the DVR, so no port forwarding is needed.
