I no longer can't play back from the DVR. Whether using the search button or the play button, the DVR turns into play mode for about 1 second, then immediately switches back to normal (recording) mode. I verified the HDD status and there seems to be data recorded. I also rebooted the DVR and loaded the default config. But playback still not working.

    Any idea?

    htt72,

Have you tried reformatting the Hard Drive?

Yes I did (maybe 4 or 5 times).

I have also tried to boot in playback mode only (press Play during boot) but still not able to play anything out of the hard drive.

I actually remember that the first time playback failed, the date on the hard drive indicated ???/???/1996. When attempting to playback, it briefly shows 00/00/1996, which is an invalid date and possibly the cause of the playback issue. But the invalid date comes back to normal after a reformatting.

After I rebooted in playback mode only (as explained above), and rebooted again to go back to normal mode, the HDD status (shown from menu) now indicates ???/???/1996 again.

I switched the DVR into continuous recording hoping that the invalid date would be overwritten when the recording will start over from the beginning.

Any other ideas will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks.

I removed my 2 HDDs out of my DVR and connected them to a regular PC, at least to verify if they are recognized properly. Actually, both HDDs are recognized but no partition is allocated. Do they need to be formatted? (to FAT for example)

OK, I tried another HDD and it's worst than before now. I no longer can boot the system, it keeps beeping, then restart. Power cycling the DVR 4 or 5 times, I can boot a bit further but it reboots after a short while.

Any idea? Is there any key press combination to reset all system errors at boot time?

    htt72,

Typically the HDD does need to be formatted to FAT 32 but it may vary depending on the DVR. Does the DVR boot if you remove the HDD completely?

No, it doesn't boot even if HDD is unplugged.

Now I've sent it to a repair shop and will see if they have more luck.
