Hi, everyone. Mike from CCTV Camera Pros here. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit our blog. You can watch the below videos to see a comparison of H.264, H.265, H.265+, and H.265s video codex.
I made all the recordings using that four-megapixel dome IP camera that you see behind me on the right. So why did I do this comparison?
Basically, those codex provide different levels of compression. So they use a different amount of disk space and a different amount of bandwidth because some of them compress video more than others. So H.264 is the oldest compression and it compresses video the least amount. And then it goes H.265, which compresses video about 50% more than 264. Then H.265+ was invented, which compresses video, roughly 50% more than H.265. And then last, and most recently, H.265s supposedly improves things by another, almost 50% more compression over H.265+.
But my opinion is all that compression can’t come without some sacrifice. So I wanted to see for myself if the video quality degrades when going up the chain of those video compressions.
So I tested all of them and I’ll give you the spoiler alert in the end. The H.265s compression is a little bit choppy. For some people where disk space is most important. It’s probably a good compression to use. But if you want the highest quality video and the most compression, probably the H.265+ is the best choice right now. Or H.265 might be the safest bet because it’s been out for so long.
