LPR Camera Integration for Gate Access Control

A customer recently contacted me on YouTube and asked the following question in regards to using an LPR camera for gate access control.

In a license plate recognition system, what advantages does the Wiegand protocol provide compared to using on of the alarm relay out ports on a Viewtron NVR?

This is a great question! The alarm relay outputs ports on Viewtron NVRs are simple open or closed circuits that can be used to directly open and close a gate. The Viewtron NVR must manage the authorized license plates in it’s plate database if you want to use the alarm output for gate integration. The Wiegand output on the Viewtron NVR on the other hand can send information via the Wiegand protocol. Specifically it can send an access control card number to an external system. This allows gate access control systems to manage the authorized users for entry. The license plate is mapped to a card ID on the Viewtron NVR’s license plate database. When a plate is detected, the card ID that is mapped to that plate is sent over the Wiegand connection.

Basically, if you want to manage the authorized users for you gate on the Viewtron NVR, you can use the alarm output. If have an existing access control system that supports Wiegand and you want it to manage access control, use the Wiegand port for integration.
