Enable Smart Motion Detection People Alerts on Security Cameras

Home Forums Viewtron Security Camera Systems Support Viewtron Hybrid DVR Support Enable Smart Motion Detection People Alerts on Security Cameras

  • Customers ask us about this a lot when installing security cameras to monitor remote properties. How do I turn on Smart Motion Detection for people and vehicles on a Viewtron hybrid DVR, and how do I get a useful push notification alert on my phone instead of a flood of false alarms or a pop-up that only shows on the monitor at the site?

Smart Motion Detection is the AI people / vehicle filter built into Viewtron hybrid DVRs for BNC cameras. On the recorder menu it is often labeled SMD. It is different from traditional pixel motion detection, and it is also different from the intrusion / line-crossing tools on Viewtron AI IP cameras. If you are on IP cameras only, Smart Motion Detection is not the path—see Does Smart Motion Detection (SMD) work with IP cameras?. For the video walkthrough of basic setup, watch Smart Motion Detection Security Camera Reduces False Alarms.

    1. Open Smart Motion Detection on the DVR

From live view, open the menu (lower left) and go to Settings > AI / Event > SMD (Smart Motion Detection).

Pick the camera from the camera name dropdown. You set Smart Motion Detection one camera at a time—switch the dropdown for each channel you care about (driveway, deck, road approach, and so on).

    2. If the Enable box is missing, free up AI resources first

This is the gotcha we see on support calls. If you go into Smart Motion Detection and there is no Enable checkbox, or the screen looks “stuck,” check whether Intrusion or Line Crossing is already enabled on one of the cameras.

On Viewtron hybrid DVRs, those AI events can take the processing budget. When that happens, Smart Motion Detection will not enable cleanly—even on other cameras. Go through Intrusion and Line Crossing for each camera, uncheck Enable, and Apply. Then come back to SMD. You should see the Enable box again.

If the menu still looks wrong after that, update the DVR firmware and reboot, then open Smart Motion Detection again.

    3. Enable people and motor vehicle detection

On the Smart Motion Detection screen for each camera:

    1. Check Enable (or SMD / Enable).
    2. Check People (human) and / or Motor Vehicle, depending on what you want alerts for. For a remote house or shop, most people want both.
    3. Set sensitivity. Start in the middle. If you get too many pushes from distant road traffic or side-by-sides cutting across the edge of the scene, turn sensitivity down. If you miss a person walking onto the deck, turn it up a little and retest.
    4. Click Apply.

Because you are filtering for people and vehicles—not every pixel change—you already cut a lot of false alarms from trees, shadows, and night IR noise compared with regular motion detection.

    4. Draw the detection grid (empty grid = no alerts)

The grid is the area Smart Motion Detection is allowed to watch. By default it is a full grid. That is what you want for a deck or doorway camera.

    • To clear cells and redraw: use Clear, then drag from the top-left down toward the bottom-right to paint the area you want.
    • To erase part of the grid: drag from the bottom-right up toward the top-left.
    • If you leave the grid empty, you will not get Smart Motion Detection alerts for that camera—even if Enable is checked.

For a road or driveway camera, trim the grid so you are not watching every car that never enters your property. Leave a full grid on the cameras that protect doors, decks, and close approaches.

    5. Trigger Mode: phone push vs recorder pop-up

Still on the camera setup, open Trigger Mode. This is where you choose what happens when Smart Motion Detection fires.

    • Push — sends a mobile push notification. On the phone you get a thumbnail; tap it and the app takes you into that event / playback. This is what you want when the property is hundreds of miles away (or you are just not standing in front of the DVR).
    • Pop-up video — pops the live camera on the recorder’s monitor at the site. It does not create the same pop-up on your phone. Great when someone is on-site. Not a substitute for remote phone alerts.
    • Email — supported, but we recommend push over email for day-to-day alerts.
    • You can also leave recording / snapshot options on so the event is easy to find later.

For a remote site, enable Push, Apply, and skip relying on pop-up video unless someone is watching the local monitor.

    6. Turn push on in the phone app

The DVR can be set to push and you still get nothing if the app has notifications off—especially if you muted them earlier during a false-alarm storm.

    1. Open the Viewtron / SuperLive Plus app and connect to the recorder (same serial / QR you used for remote view).
    2. From the main screen, open the top-left menu. Depending on app version you will see Local, or a configuration / settings icon with Push Setting.
    3. Enable notifications / subscribe for that device, then save.
    4. Confirm the phone’s iOS or Android system settings also allow alerts for the app.

    7. Quick remote connectivity check (NAT)

If the site is remote and pushes never arrive, verify P2P / NAT on the recorder: Settings > Network > NAT. You want status Success and the serial that matches what is in the app. If NAT is failing, fix network / remote access first—Smart Motion Detection settings will not help if the phone cannot reach the push path.

    8. Test it the simple way

Pick one camera (deck or door is easiest). Walk into the grid and wait a few seconds. You should get a push that mentions the camera and a people (or vehicle) event. Tap the thumbnail and confirm playback / live opens.

If recording shows motion but you never get a push: recheck Trigger Mode ? Push on that camera, and recheck app notification subscribe. If you get too many pushes: lower sensitivity and / or shrink the grid away from public road traffic.
